Adele Hydrogen Logo

Winner of the AMI La French Tech BFC competition

Adele Hydrogen

Adele Hydrogen, a Lyon-based Cleantech/Deeptech company founded in 2023 and winner of Bpifrance’s French Tech Emergence grant, has created an innovative technology for alkaline electrolyser electrodes that significantly reduces the cost of producing green hydrogen.

The start-up has developed an innovative manufacturing method that uses neither platinum group metals nor rare earths, while at the same time greatly improving performance in alkaline electrolysis. Adele Hydrogen electrodes are also distinguished by their durability and lack of sensitivity to iron.

Last year, Adele Hydrogen completed several production batches, sold electrodes to leaders in alkaline electrolysis, and completed its first round of PreSeed funding. Over the next 12 months, Adele Hydrogen will conduct a pilot with a European partner, and develop its own testing and production capabilities.

At the Hydrogen Business For Climate event in Montbéliard, Adele Hydrogen is looking forward to expanding its network with French players in the hydrogen sector and forging collaborations with research institutes, suppliers and potential customers.

logo_ORECA_Groupe_quadri

ORECA

Founded by Hugues de Chaunac in 1973 and based near the Paul Ricard and Magny-Cours circuits in France, ORECA has evolved across nearly 50 years of existence into a group of 300 collaborators with international influence. Over the years, the company has acquired extensive know-how enabling it to develop a racing car and engine from the initial design to the on-track support of customer teams by applying its expertise in the preparation, design and development of thrusters for manufacturers.

Last innovation:

In 2021, ORECA will begin a feasibility study into the development of a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine as an alternative to petrol for motor sport. This study is being launched in two major disciplines, rally-raid and endurance racing.
The use of hydrogen helps to meet the challenges of the ecological transition. Compared with the combustion of carbon-based fuels, the combustion of hydrogen does not produce carbon dioxide (CO₂), it drastically reduces the level of NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) emissions as well as the level of particles emitted.

ORECA used as its base a 2-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged engine developed entirely in-house, which it controls. As hydrogen combustion is different from petrol combustion, simulations had to be carried out (in cooperation with FEV) to adapt the engine to hydrogen combustion. These included interventions and innovations involving the redefinition of the combustion chamber and the air and hydrogen supply systems. This involves a partial redesign of the cylinder head and piston, the adaptation of a new turbocharger and the use of injectors specifically developed for hydrogen.
Since October 2022, ORECA’s Hydrogen engine has been in the validation phase on the engine test bench. The engine test bed is located on the Magny-Cours site, and was specifically modified in 2022 to accommodate this type of development. The various test campaigns are used to validate the simulations carried out and to optimise the engine for use in motor sport.
